How the career-change style (転職写真) looks

The photo an experienced professional attaches to a rirekisho or a work-history sheet: calmer than the new-graduate recruit suit.

What the result looks like

  • Clothing: a well-fitted charcoal, navy or gray business suit with a white or light-blue shirt. For men a subdued tie; for women a jacket over a simple blouse with minimal accessories.
  • Hair: neat, eyes uncovered, ears mostly visible.
  • Expression: mouth closed with a gentle, natural smile, calm and trustworthy, no teeth. Eyes into the lens.
  • Background: plain light gray.
  • Light: soft, even studio light with slight shaping on the face.
  • Framing: facing the camera, head to mid-chest, with a little space above the head.

What is official, and what is not

The photo field of the paper 履歴書 is 36–40 mm by 24–30 mm, the applicant alone, chest up, glued on the back, per the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare template. Most people use 4 × 3 cm.

Clothing, expression and backdrop colour are not regulated; the list above is our standard, based on common résumé practice.

Not for residence cards, My Number cards, passports or other government documents. The Immigration Services Agency photo standard does not allow image editing, and the My Number card guidance rejects faces that differ markedly from normal. Use a photo booth or a studio for those.

We do not change your face

Face shape, features, skin texture, moles and marks stay as in your selfie. We do not slim, smooth or make you look younger. What changes is the clothing, how your hair is arranged, the background, the light, the framing and the expression.

Whatever is in the selfie carries over, so a selfie taken from very close keeps the proportions of that distance. Read why your photo doesn't look like you.

Questions

How is it different from the job-hunting style?

The suit is a calmer charcoal, navy or gray instead of the new-graduate navy or black recruit suit, and the expression is a gentle closed-mouth smile.

Is it good for LinkedIn?

It works, though the business profile style is softer. See LinkedIn photos in Japan.
