How the job-hunting style (就活写真) looks

The photo Japanese graduates attach to entry sheets and recruiting sites. Here is exactly what we change, written down in advance.

What the result looks like

  • Clothing: a plain dark navy or black recruit suit with a white shirt. For men a plain navy tie; for women the jacket over a white blouse. Whatever you wear in the selfie is replaced.
  • Hair: forehead and eyebrows clear, nothing over the eyes. Short hair tidied so the ears show; long hair pulled back low so ears and jawline are visible.
  • Expression: mouth closed, corners not lifted much, a calm and serious look. Eyes fully open, looking into the lens.
  • Background: plain pale blue-gray or white.
  • Light: bright, soft, even front light with minimal shadows.
  • Framing: facing the camera, head to mid-chest, with a little space above the head.

What is official, and what is not

The photo field of the paper 履歴書 is set by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare template: 36–40 mm tall by 24–30 mm wide, the applicant alone, chest up. Crop to that size and framing.

Nothing official says what to wear, how to style your hair, how to look, or what colour the backdrop is. The list above is our standard, based on what is common for job hunting. If an employer specifies a format or dress code, follow that.

Not for residence cards, My Number cards, passports or other government documents. The Immigration Services Agency photo standard does not allow image editing, and the My Number card guidance rejects faces that differ markedly from normal. Use a photo booth or a studio for those.

We do not change your face

Face shape, features, skin texture, moles and marks stay as in your selfie. We do not slim, smooth or make you look younger. What changes is the clothing, how your hair is arranged, the background, the light, the framing and the expression.

Whatever is in the selfie carries over, so a selfie taken from very close keeps the proportions of that distance. Read why your photo doesn't look like you.

Questions

Can I smile?

This style has a closed-mouth, calm expression. The career-change style has a gentle closed-mouth smile and the business profile a natural smile with a little teeth.

Will it work if I take the selfie in casual clothes?

Yes. The clothing is replaced with the suit above. Details differ between versions, which is why you get four to choose from.
