A LinkedIn photo that works for the Japanese job market
Recommended style: Business profile (ビジネスプロフィール)
Bilingual roles in Japan are often filled through recruiters who search LinkedIn first. A clear, conservative photo helps you look like someone a Japanese client company would hire.
How LinkedIn is used in Japan
Many traditional Japanese companies still hire through job sites and their own portals, but foreign-affiliated companies (外資系), startups and bilingual recruitment agencies rely on LinkedIn.
Recruiters search for bilingual candidates and forward profiles to their clients, so your photo is often seen by a Japanese hiring manager you have never spoken to. It should make sense to them, not only to colleagues back home.
What reads well to Japanese hiring managers
- Business attire: a suit or a jacket and collared shirt. More conservative than a typical US or European tech profile.
- A plain or softly blurred office background.
- A calm, closed-mouth smile and your face clearly visible: no sunglasses, hats or strong filters.
- Recent and recognisable: the person on the first video call should be the person in the photo.
- Avoid holiday crops, group-photo crops and photos where you are small in the frame.
Make the rest of the profile work in Japan
- Add a Japanese-language version of your profile: LinkedIn lets you create a profile in another language.
- State your Japanese level (for example JLPT N2) and your working languages.
- Say whether you can work in Japan, for example your visa category or permanent residency, since recruiters filter on it.
- Set your location to the Japanese city you work in.
Use the same photo elsewhere
The same portrait works on Japanese career sites, your company chat and email profile, and conference or speaker bios. It is not for government documents: those need an unedited photo (see ID photos in Japan).
Questions
Is an AI-made photo allowed on LinkedIn?
LinkedIn's Professional Community Policies ask you not to use "any other image that is not your likeness" as your profile photo. A portrait made from your own selfie that keeps your face fits that; pick the version that looks most like you.
Do I need different photos for my English and Japanese profiles?
No. One profile photo is shown for every language version of your profile.
Which style should I choose?
Business profile (ビジネスプロフィール) for most roles. If you are applying to traditional Japanese companies, the Job-hunting portrait (就活写真) is more formal.
